1. Aim
To determine the slip resistance of tile adhesive
i.e. the ability of adhesive to resist downward movement of tile after fixing on a vertical surface.
2. Apparatus / Materials Required
- Tile adhesive sample
- Concrete slab (400 × 400 × 20 mm)
- Masking tape
- Stainless steel spacers
- Tile piece (100 × 100 mm)
- Weighing load (5 kg)
- Vernier caliper
- Marker / pencil
- Stopwatch / timer
3. Method / Procedure
A clean concrete slab of size 400 × 400 × 20 mm is taken as the substrate. Masking tape is applied on the upper surface to define the test area, and stainless-steel spacers are placed on the outer sides to maintain uniform thickness. The tile adhesive is then applied evenly within the marked area, and a 100 × 100 mm tile piece is fixed firmly onto it. A load of 5 kg is placed on the tile for 30 seconds to ensure proper contact and bonding. After removing the load, three reference points are marked on the tile, and the initial gap/position is measured using a vernier caliper. The concrete slab is then placed in a vertical position and kept undisturbed for 20 minutes. After this duration, the final position of the tile is measured again at the same three marked points using the vernier caliper. The difference between initial and final readings is calculated to determine the slip.
